A forest purifies acid rain.

In order for nature to aim at symbiosis with people, a certain amount of development is required. A forest is cut down and it is also required for us to build a way there. However, we have to consider something now when this forest decreases in number every moment. Water and oxygen are indispensable in order for us to make a living. There are a function to absorb carbon dioxide in a forest and to change it to oxygen, and a function to change the rain containing contaminants (environmental hormones, heavy metal, etc.) to beautiful water. This time, the examination wood currently studied about this "function which purifies the rain with which the forest was polluted" was visited. Mr. Katayama, former Professor of Kyoto University (Professor of University of Human Environments) and Mr. Tani, Professor of Kyoto University accompanied.

The examination wood of Kyoto University is in a mountain with Shiga Prefecture. It does not know where the research institution is only by seeing from outside. It is because it is built using a natural mountain as it is in order to take out a research result correctly. Therefore, the tree which the calamity etc. destroyed lies in the institution as it is.

What attached the funnel of a PET bottle in the ground, and equipment made from the bucket and the hose were here and there alike, and were located in a line with the examination institution. There was also a little surprise with whether it is the examination ground where research to which this progressed most truly in Japan is done.

First, equipment is located in a line although both sides, such as an exploitation machine which were made from the one where altitude is higher using the PET bottle, the bucket, etc., extract the rain which arrived at the ground mainly through all the media in a forest. In addition, there was equipment which divides into a 5cm interval the water contained in the ground, and extracts it. These are all extracted as a sample of the rain which falls to a forest. Apart from them, two steel towers rise up. Height is about 28m. The quantity of the carbon dioxide which is mainly outside woods is measured, or the quantity of the water which evaporates from woods is measured.

And those water flows into the direction at the base of a mountain, and brought together in one place. Here, finally the rain of which falls to a forest, the moisture of which evaporates, and it judges synthetically the contaminant as a result, the contaminant of which carried the forest and was purified.

Mr. Katayama told. "A forest is in the state where contaminants, such as a heavy metal and environmental hormones, are saved up now. However, yet, the forest will not have resulted, by the time it is destroyed. It is the target of our research to discern till when this is maintained."

"It has become clear by the research by present for a forest to purify acid rain perfectly and to give us delicious water."

The authority of hydrology, Mr. Tani, and the authority of forest ecology, Mr. Katayama have said. "This kind of research repeats simple work, and directivity is in sight by continuing taking data. It is not meaningful if it does not continue. By getting to know work of woods, how to maintain balance with people and woods can be seen.
